Reminders about Research Re-engagement
The process for a gradual reactivation of human research at U-M began in June. Studies (including exempt projects) that wish to resume or initiate face-to-face interaction with research participants are being activated based on tiers that were developed to balance the risk of transmitting COVID-19 with the potential benefits of research participation for individuals. See the UMOR Research Re-engagement webpage for information regarding the Human Research Activation process, including the Human Research Activation Committee and the Human Research Activation Checklist. To date, only projects meeting the criteria for Tiers 1 and 2 have been reactivated. For questions about the Human Research Activation Committee checklist and approval process, please contact [email protected]. See also the IRB-HSBS COVID-19 webpage.
Undergraduate Research Activity
Per the Vice President for Research Rebecca Cunningham’s August 28 Update, only senior students (individuals entering their senior year of coursework) who already have experience working with the same research team (laboratory, human, field and studio research) can resume in-person research and scholarship at this time. Undergraduates at any year of study are welcome and encouraged to join research teams if their work can be done remotely. Research leadership will reassess this policy on October 1 to determine whether more undergraduates can safely resume in-person research and scholarship.
